Our Hardy Plants Range at Brownthwaite is very diverse. We can help you provide all the different plant species to decorate your home with new leafy companions.

We stock a large range of plants and can grow a range of flowers or plants for you, upon request.

Types of Plants We Stock
Whilst we stock a large range of plant and have the ability to raise specific species upon request, our stock changes seasonally.
We recommend calling or messaging should you have a specific type of plant/flower in mind.






Perennials
- Season: All year round
- Description: Perennials are those plants that have little or no woody growth from trees and shrubs.
- Common Types: Daylilies, Russian Sage, Salvia, Lavender, Shasta Daisy, Hosta
- Gardening Tips: Take cuttings from existing plants & replant them in the ground.
- Gardening Tips: Bloom time is approx 3-4 weeks, so fill your flower bed with a wide variety!
- Gardening Tips: In order to increase blooming, regular remove the dead flowers.
- Facts: They may not bloom in the first year, but with care and attention they will in the second year.
- Facts: They often have a rest cycle where they remain dormant for a period of time.
- Facts: These types of plants or flowers, once established, require minimal upkeep or maintenance.






Alpines
- Season: Plant all year around - likely to settle best in spring.
- Description: Plants that grow in alpine climates: harsh conditions, poor soil & cold temperatures.
- Common Types: Pasque Flower, Creeping Thyme, Saxifrages, Alpine Bulbs, Sedums, Primula
- Gardening Tips: There are plenty Alpines resistant to cold weather & dry summers.
- Gardening Tips: Adding a layer of gravel to the top of your soil can increase the life expectancy
- Gardening Tips: Good drainage is important - so be sure to use soil/compost that quickly drains.
- Facts: Alpines adapted to grow on steep cliffs so they have long growing roots - often over 60cm.
- Facts: Alpine plants are pollinated by flies, beetles, and moths
- Facts: Treeless Alpines grow above 2,500ft above sea level in Japan




Hydrangeas
- Season: Spring & Autumn
- Description: A hardy shrub known for large, stunning flower blooms with little seed production
- Common Types: Lacecap, Mophead, Panicle, Smooth
- Gardening Tips: Train your hydrangeas onto galvanise wires, there roots will do the rest.
- Gardening Tips: They will thrive in moist soil and tend to wilt in the hot weather.
- Gardening Tips: Plant them in Spring/Autumn when the soil is warm and moist.
- Facts: The PH level may effect the colour of your plants leaves e.g growing blue instead of pink
- Facts: The name “Hydrangea” originates from Ancient Greek words for “water vessel”
- Facts: Hydrangeas are native to America & Asia.
